Colombia elects former rebel Gustavo Petro to develop into country’s first leftist president

Petro, who was jailed in the 1980s for his involvement in the defunct M-19 motion, promised a suite of financial reforms during his campaign, such as greater taxes, far more federal government shelling out, and changes to the country’s pension program.
